UPDATES:

September 20th:

Hey Katy Cast Family!

Rehearsals have been going great so far!

Here are some Important Director's Notes:

1. I'd like everyone to be off script ASAP. Some kids are already memorized and I'm super proud of them as well as some kids with lots of lines are already doing their best to work off script! Yay! This is an iconic show, so it is VITAL that our cast do their best to memorize their lines, word for word - many people have the show memorized and many of our lines are straight from the movie, so please help your child run their lines at home. :) There are also apps you can use to help your child memorize lines if you're strapped for time. ;)

2. Some kids need knee pads.

Ask your child if when they are a munchkin, they are standing or on their knees. Right now, EVERYONE is a munchkin in Ruby or Emerald Cast. This may change by showtime, but for now if you can purchase a cheap set of knee pads for rehearsal, that would be great! They have cheap foam construction knee pads at Home Depot for like $2.88 - these are fine for rehearsal and then you'll have a set at home for future projects! ;) We'll worry about getting the "right" knee pads closer to the show, when we know what costumes will look like.

3. We DON'T have a Lunch Break. ;)

Generally we have a short 5-8 minute potty, drink water, and maybe eat a "bite" of something type break. I don't mind how much food the kids bring, but please reinforce at home that they may not have a chance to eat it all during our break. They can eat their munchies before coming to theatre and on their way home, so it doesn't hurt to bring them, but they shouldn't expect a long enough break to finish their food. ;)

4. Please send your child in Jazz Shoes or socks EVERY week.

Please remember and comply with our dress code for this semester. :) As a reminder, that means jazz shoes or socks - we do a lot of dancing in rehearsal and it's best if the kids can use the shoes they'll be wearing in the show (bare feet make some of the moves difficult)! The other dress codes are no short shorts and no spaghetti strap tops. Thanks for your support in this area! :)

5. Please help your kids have access to our music tracks.

The music tracks are on our show page. Where this email is posted. It's super important for the kids to be familiar with the music with and without the vocals. If you have ANY questions or challenges in accessing the music, please reach out to me or Abby.

Thank you for your support and dedication! This will be a WONDERFUL SHOW and we're grateful for each and every child who is in it! <3

Ms. Cari

September 3rd:

Dear Katy Wizard of Oz Cast,

You all did GREAT last Wednesday in our script read-throughs!

Many of you showed your skills and your talents through picking up these brand new lines and reading complex words with determination and a lot of "courage". It's hard to try out a new character, and sometimes even a new voice, in front of all your castmates for the first time! Way to go!

YOUR CHILD HAS BEEN ASSIGNED HOMEWORK!!! I know we're all homeschoolers, but this is FUN homework!

I'd like all of our cast members to watch the original Wizard of Oz!!! Yay!!!

You can make this into a weekend family movie night, or do it during the day whenever you please, but we ask that most everyone (especially those who have not seen the movie before!) watch the show before we meet next Wednesday (9/11/2019).

There are a few things we need to go over regarding rehearsals-

Food - I understand that three hours is a long time to ask kids to commit to without food, but parents, if you could make sure your child has a large, early lunch before rehearsal, then they won't feel like they need to eat a whole "meal" during the short break we provide in the middle of rehearsal. You should, however, still feel free to send a little (non-messy) snack, because kids (especially the little ones) get hungry over time. Also, please always send a spill proof water bottle and a pencil and/or highlighter

Dress code - Please remember the dress code rules that were covered in our parent meeting and help your kids dress appropriately. This includes no spaghetti strap tops, no short shorts and no bare feet. Cast members should come to rehearsal in jazz shoes (if they have them) or at least socks. Thank you! :)

Absences - I strongly recommend that students do not miss class as much as possible, even when sick. Exceptions to this request are cases of serious injury, vomiting, diarrhea, fever of 101+, or being diagnosed with something contagious. When you do have a conflict, or are sick, please let me know ASAP by text or phone call, so we can shift the schedule to better rehearse in your child's absence. :)

Reading - Before we did our read through, I made sure to let all the children know that we are not to pick on or bully anyone who has difficulty reading. As homeschoolers, and as diverse people, we all are at different places in our growth. While it is good to be respectful to those who struggle, there are several parts which contain quite a few lines, and have been given to kids who perhaps struggle a little with reading all these big words. If your child struggles with reading, memorizing, or speaking their lines, please work with them at home. We are an educational theater, and love to watch our actors grow and mature through the course of the semester. However, if you feel that the workload that has been given to your child is far too big for them to handle (parents know their child), please let me know, so I can rearrange roles or lines as we want everyone to feel successful and I know we have a few first timers in our show! <3

More Homework - Along with watching the Wizard of Oz, every single day your child should be working on memorizing lines. This is best achieved with a partner, so please help your kids get their lines memorized ASAP - I'd like our cast to be off script by September 18, 2019! The sooner we're off script, the more efficient progress we'll have as a cast.

We have scouted out some clips on YouTube which your child can use to try and get a feel for their character, before this Wednesday's rehearsal! Please help them watch as many clips as possible, but especially the ones applying to their roles.

Please remember, however, that simply because the actor in the original did the role this way, does not mean you have to do the role this way! We simply want to give the kids who are struggling with creating a voice or style for their character a chance to see what the original cast looked like!

I know this show may seem like a lot to handle, but remember that every kid is crucial to the cast, and we want to have a productive and fun time! I can't wait to see all of you in rehearsal this Wednesday!

Theatrically Yours,

Ms. Cari
